  f it’s true that we’re molded by the image of our creator, than “Stasis” really does examine our alternative architect and its vision for us. If machines could bring back humans from disease or death, whose image would we be formed in? And would we still be human? Thus is explored in the fascinating and morbid animated short “Stasis” in which we learn of how a human body is reincarnated with grim results. Hite gives ace direction following the process, and the stop motion animation is nearly flawless, while the re-birth sequence is very reminiscent of “Metropolis”, with its female subject being created by machine, no longer a human. With swift animation and beautiful set pieces reminiscent of HG Giger’s designs and some odd machinery. “Stasis” is a sinister glimpse in to re-evolution and re-birth of the modern age, with a macabre ending that really leaves the door open for possibilities in to a larger story.

  The short animation is the beginning of a feature film. The surreal scenario mixes live action with classic stop-motion. Characters were sculpted and miniature sets built. Both the cryo and bio-generator sets were erected in the living room of Hite's one-bedroom, furniture less apartment over the two plus years he worked on the film. The film was shot on a Canon XL1 mini DV camera, composited in After Effects and edited in Adobe Premiere 6. The stop-motion software, Frame Thief, was used to animate the machines and characters.

  Another animated stand-out at the fest was Jason A. Hite’s Stasis, the first part of science-fiction saga inspired by Metropolis, Frankenstein, The Matrix and the designs of H.R. Giger. The stop-motion film takes viewers into the bowels of a biomechanical world where deceased humans are kept in cryostasis chambers, waiting to be thawed and revived by advances in medical technology. Viewers watch as the body of one woman is extracted and invaded by “bio-drones,” which resurrect her as one of their own. A sculptor by trade, Hite makes Halloween masks for a living and was able to apply his skills to his first animated project, an atmospheric and nightmarish vision of rebirth.
