Synopsis

Here are the really scenic highlights from our recent snowmobiling trips and tours. They are gently edited down from almost 200 hours of widescreen trailriding footage, including a lot of smooth hoodcam. I briefly introduce each of the six regions visited, but most of the soundtrack is "easy riding music". The regions are: Quebec including Gaspe, Ontario, Labrador, northern Maine and Pennsylvania. So enjoy - even if you just want to sample our little subculture, Ted. I am so excited that someone has put together a video that shows scenic riding. All the other videos we have seen and purchased just show guys jumping off cliffs and crashing their sleds.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF VIDEO

When snowmobile videos come to our office, this is what we expect to see: cornice jumps, big air, hard-charging music and maybe a compound fracture. Then came the video “Snowmobile Saddlebag Tours,” filmed and produced by Ted Perkins.

It’s a refreshing change of location and pace from the standard video, as Perkins highlights East coast riding, but from the perspective of what most trail riders enjoy: smooth trails, scenic vistas and a bit of adventure. It’s easy to watch the video and think, “This is why I ride.” It could also serve as an answer to people who ask, “What’s so great about snowmobiling?”

Perkins said he started making movies of his snowmobile trips in the late 1960s, converted to video in the 1980s and has recently converted to high-definition equipment.

The video came out of hundreds of hours of footage shot on various tours in the East. After tours, he’d edit his footage into video scrapbooks for other trip participants. Then came the inspiration to make a feature-length DVD.

“I consider this a documentary of the sport,” he said. “If someone finds this in 100 years, it will give a good glimpse of how snowmobiling was at this time.”

Dialog is minimal, except for some background information at the start of each segment. The videography isn’t always polished, but it’s not shaky. And if it doesn’t give you some new ideas for destinations, then you’re probably better off in your own backyard anyhow.
