Synopsis

Johnny O'Neal played the legendary jazz pianist Art Tatum in the award-winning film "Ray". Director Taylor Hackford selected Johnny because he wanted an excellent pianist with chops as prodigious as Tatum's. O'Neal brings to this 2006 live Trio concert his tremendous talent and the experience gained during his years as band leader and during stints as a member of the bands of Clark Terry, Art Blakey, Milt Jackson, Carmen McRae, and many more. Included is interview footage with O'Neal and pianist Mulgrew Miller, who explains why he considers O'Neal "one of the two greatest living jazz musicians of my generation". Just view the sample and see for yourself.

Johnny and his bandmates perform a dynamic mix of songs from the Great American Songbook, gospel, and "new standards": Just You, Just Me; Next Spring; Dreamy; Tight; Saving My Love for You; Intellectual Grease; Overjoyed; I Concentrate on You; Honeysuckle Rose; Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum; Just a Closer Walk with Thee; That's All....
