Synopsis

In december 2005, Amélie-les-crayons had already played the show 150 times in France, Belgium, Switzerland ans Quebec. We thought it was high time to put it on a DVD. So there it is, with 19 songs, the magical piano (which grows flowers !), the beautiful lights, the 3 loony guys and Amelie, charming as ever. There also is a beautiful animated menu and original sequences : 40 minute of short films around all the members of the team in quite unexpected situations, a cartoon too, a previously unreleased track and its video clip, and other funny things hidden in the menu.

Wonderful concert from the nutty and lovable amélie-les-crayons. If you like chanson and bal-musette (think Yann Tiersen's soundtrack for Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain) she'll be right up your alley, even if your French vocabulary is limited to “Je ne parle pas le français.” More than just a proficient piano player, Amélie is a visual artist who draws on her band mates and the audience to weave an experience with music, color and character. She sings, she dances, she howls, she cries, she rips the pencils out her hair – never a dull moment!

Besides the 19 songs performed for the concert, the dvd has a small short based on her song “la garde robe d'elizabeth,” the wintery music video for “les jours de neige en ville,” a 40-minute behind-the-scenes featurette, a short animation by Samuel Ribeyron (the illustrator responsible for her posters and CD/DVD covers), and a 1-minute sketch involving Amélie's dinner table. There is also an online address and “bonus” code for Le Mangeur de Coquelicots, but to the best of my knowledge that website and content are no longer available. At least the “Elizabeth” easter egg is still present on the dvd - be sure to search the menu thoroughly!

The DVD 9 plays peachy keen on my PAL-friendly player, and the 16:9 transfer delivered via S-Video (alas, no HDMI connection) looks beautiful on my HDtv. The stereo mix captures the full range of dynamics quite nicely. The animated menus (also designed by Samuel Ribeyron) load quickly, are adorable, and best of all, easy to navigate. As a non-native-barely-speaker of French I would have loved if subtitles were available, mais non. C'est la vie...

Subtitles or no, Le Tour de la Question is completely worth the purchase price. Fans will be enchanted to see amélie-les-crayons in action, and it makes a great entry point into her discography for anyone who has recently discovered her.
