Synopsis

"Between Two Worlds" is a powerful documentary that caputures rare and dramatic footage of the Hmong buying and sacrificing a cow in rural Illinois, a missionary trying to convert a traditional Hmong family, and an unexplained phenomenon (SUNDS) in which young Hmong men die in their sleep. The traditions of this displaced people are in danger of being lost -- perhaps forever. The film shows a people caught between two worlds.

Many of the more than 60,000 Hmong refugees who have been transplanted from agrarian mountain villages in northern Laos to the U.S. have resettled in high-rise tenements in Chicago and other cities. With them they bring their ancient shamanic rituals and ceremonies such as animal sacrifice and trance-like healing.
