• Director: Cullen Hoback | bio

  Cullen Hoback has an eye for the abnormal, and succeeds in focusing on folks who are odd, unusual, and unique, and yet can't help but root for or sympathize with in the end. While we're sure we should be mocking the folks Hoback places on-screen, quite often you'll find yourself liking them, and maybe even wanting to meet them.

  Cullen Hoback is an up-and-coming director whose films combine an admiration for fantasy with a shrewd sense of reality. Mr. Hoback's most recent feature film MONSTER CAMP is a documentary about live-action roleplayers. His most recent narrative film, FREEDOM STATE, had its world premiere in March 2006 at Cinequest and has since screened at numerous festivals including: Longbaugh (Portland, Ore.) Moondance (Hollywood), FAIF (Hollywood), Smogdance (Los Angeles) Annapolis, Santa Fe, Rome International (Rome, Ga.), and the Sunscreen Film Festival (St. Petersburg). It was nominated for Best Picture, Best Editing and Best Screenplay at the FAIF Festival.

  His most recent short film, Gaining Miles won numerous awards in 2003-04, including the Grand Jury Prize at the New York International Film Festival, Best Drama at the DV Awards, Best Narrative at the Hollywood Mini-DV Festival, and was an Official Selection of the LA International Family Film Festival. Mr. Hoback has also been at the helm of numerous music videos and commercials as Head of Production at Portland’s Clear Sky Pictures and Hyrax Films LLC.

• Producer: Aaron Kirk Douglas | bio

  Aaron Douglas began his career in broadcast news and spent many years as a law firm marketing and business development professional. After returning to school to study filmmaking, his first documentary My Days of Awe and Grief: Dirk and Me (2004) was selected best documentary at Portland’s Forest Film Festival. His first narrative film, Freedom State (2006), directed by Cullen Hoback, made Oregon film history as the state’s first fiction film project with nonprofit fiscal sponsorship.

  In 2006 Freedom State screened at the Cinequest, Longbaugh, Moondance, FAIF, Annapolis and Santa Fe Film Festivals, among others. At the FAIF Film Festival in Hollywood, FREEDOM STATE was nominated for Best Feature, Best Screenplay and Best Editing.

  Mr. Douglas recently co-produced a feature documentary on male couples entitled The Man You Had in Mind (2006); its world premiere was in the fall of 2006 at the Portland Gay & Lesbian Film Festival and which has been licensed for broadcast in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza Strip on the YES Satellite network. He is currently working on a documentary about the Portland bicycling scene, and recently joined the board of Film Action Oregon & the Hollywood Theatre.

  In just a few short years, Shawn Sundby has racked up an impressive list of dozens upon dozens of DP credits. Ranging from commercials to TV to short films and music videos. He spent three years working on the series The PJ’s and one of his most recent TV productions was this past December’s short Santa and the States for the NBC TV show Saturday Night Live.

• Production Designer: Travis Nicholas Zariwny | bio

  Travis Zariwny has been steeped in the artistic community and motion picture industry for twelve years. Having served as Artistic Director for the Sundance Film Lab for eight years as well as being production designer on over 20 independent films. He started in the studio system but gradually moved toward the creativity and freedom of independent films, where the challenges are greater and stories richer. Mr. Zariwny’s award-winning artwork has been featured in nine gallery openings since 2002 in L.A., Utah, and in Oregon. His paintings and artwork have been showcased in numerous commercials. He was production designer on the Academy-Award nominated short Merry Christmas. In 2004, Mr. Zariwny was production designer on the filmed-in-Oregon feature Behind the Mask. Since completing Freedom State he has been active in design, DP, directing, and art direction for numerous cable, TV, and film projects.

• Costume Designer: Martha Hines | bio

  For nearly two decades, Martha Hines has been working on designing costumes for feature and independent films, television, fashion shows, and the theatre. She has been a professor in costume related courses in Paris at the Paris American Academy and the fashion school, Formamode. Since 1984, she has designed, coordinated and built more than 40 productions. Her work includes costuming for the feature films 6 Days/7 Nights with Harrison Ford and Anne Heche; Sphere starring Dustin Hoffman and Sharon Stone; and Waterworld with Kevin Costner. Recently, she has worked on numerous independent films including Lie Detector, Say Uncle, The Divine and the Sasquatch Dumpling Gang.

• Makeup Artist: Alison Binford | bio

  Alison Binford has 25 years' experience as a hair stylist. Her work for the cinema includes The Ring II,The Sisters and numerous independent films in 2004 including Lie Detector and Donut Hole. Her hair styling has been on film, on magazine covers and in catalogues, on television and in numerous commercials. Her most recent commercial was "Greasepaint," an HD commercial that aired during the 2005 Superbowl.

• Technical Advisor: Tim Scotten | bio

  Tim Scotten began his video production career 18 years ago in Whitefish, Montana, where he worked on projects ranging from TV advertising to creative programming for corporate, industrial, industrial and private clients. He later became a producer/writer/director/photographer/video editor for Continental Productions, a multi-station Montana-based broadcasting company. Since then, his talents have been put to use at North by Northwest in Boise, CMD, and numerous other Northwest agencies where Tim has become an "AVID for hire" expert, helping to sell a lot of soap, shoes and microchips. He also has experience cutting weekly shows for national broadcast on ESPN, Fox Sports, NBC, ABC and the Outdoor Channel.

• Sound Design: John Northcraft | bio

  With 10 years of experience in audio post, at age 29 John Northcraft is already a veteran. His skills range from sound design for film and television to location recording and live concert sound. John's credits include six feature films, including The Graffiti Artist, which won him Best Sound for a Narrative Feature at the 2004 Austin Film Festival. He has also worked on numerous nationally syndicated ad campaigns for Mistubishi Electronics, LG Electronics, and Leatherman Tools. Recently, John completed sound design for Bruce Campbell's audio book How to Make Love, the Bruce Campbell Way adapted from the New York Times bestseller of the same name.

• Composer: Gregory Ives | bio

  Emmy®-nominated composer Gregory Ives has written and produced and supervised film scores for numerous films and commercials. He has composed music for films receiving honors at the prestigious Sundance, New York, and Munich International Film Festivals, among others. He has performed and worked with legendary musicians including Henry Mancini, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and Michel Legrand. Gregory just recently finished a TV Pilot for one of the networks and also scored a thriller titled The Whisper starring Tony Danza that took top honors at the Miami Film Festival in 2004. He has long been a sought-after studio musician, producer, and sound designer.
