In 2001, Arthur Lee Land returned from a tour of Nigeria and Ghana with the concept of Afrograss: a synthesis of West African percussion and American bluegrass. The two musics share a synergy, each employing interlocking layers that jigsaw together to construct a sophisticated whole. But rather than simply creating a new musical style, Arthur’s vision is to savor the construction of the whole: letting the audience witness the development piece-by-piece. Realizing this vision as a solo performer, he records himself overlaying African percussion, bass, acoustic & electric guitars, and vocals into a full-band sound. He sets the music in motion, then busily – before our eyes and ears - adds timbre after timbre to the mix.
