As seen on PBS & WYBE Public Television, an intimate profile of Philadelphia musician, Rufus Harley, the worlds first jazz bagpipe player. The self-proclaimed ambassador of freedom.
Pipes of Peace is a multifaceted portrait of Harley's music, spirit and philosophy... a man who ignores conventional musical genres.
In the history of the jazz landscape you will find eccentric geniuses who create music to a different drum... and Rufus Harley is such an individual. To put it simply, there was no one like him and there has been no one remotely like him since his passing.
Pipes of Peace interweaves a rare intimate interview with Rufus Harley in his home along with insights and memories from family members, friends and many great musicians.
Harley crossed over into the rock-pop and hip-hop community guesting on diverse recordings with Laurie Anderson and The Roots.
Interviews and commentary by:
Kenneth Gamble (T.S.O.P.), Laurie Anderson (recording/performance artist), Stephen Caldwell (The Orlons), Joel Dorn (Grammy Award producer), Odean Pope, Byard Lancaster, Tommy Conwell, Stewkey (of NAZZ), Charlie Gracie, David Ivory (Grammy nominated engineer), Dee Dee Sharp, Harley's son Messiah & daughter Noah-Harmony, Joshua, Yudkin, Emanuel Thompson, Kenny Keller, Maria Fama, Charlie Gracie Jr. and cameo appearances from Pat Martino (Grammy nominated jazz guitarist) and Pa. Gov. Ed Rendell.
Rufus was also featured in the most recent concert events, B.L.A.S.T. - the Brotherly Love All-Star Tour shows at Philadelphia's TLA (South St.) and at the World Cafe Live in 2004 and 2005.
DVD Extra includes a photo gallery/slideshow of unseen Harley family photos & other archives from his collection, courtesy of Rufus and Messiah Harley.
