Working for the Man is the first ever attempt by a film/video-maker to tell the story of Burning Man's organizers and the Department of Public Works, the crew who build the city. You'll hear the story of the first burns, see rare archival footage, and watch as BRC comes to life and disappears.
Unlike a lot of other films and videos on the subject, WFTM does not begin with the scream of techno and bouncing boobs (though these appear later), but rather with the story of how Larry Harvey, Mikel Mikel, Jerry James and John Law ended up in the Black Rock Desert in the first place.
A low-fi, low-tech, and in-your-face experience, WFTM was made with a Digital 8 camera, edited on Final Cut Pro between 2000-2001, and was recently remastered using Pro Tools. Originally made as an early calling card of sorts, a means to prove to family members that something tangible can come from entertainment, this little film, though old, has become so much more.
Burning Man is one of the most influential events in modern history; please enjoy this low-fi, true to the diy experience video!
Includes bonus feature: "Trailer Park Brain Suckers," an animated science-fiction musical about a girl battling an alien out to steal her father's brain in order to fuel his space ship.
Originally premiered in May of 2001, the official "release" took place in early 2002, and I've been tinkering with the formula ever since. Someday, when I've got time on my hands, I'll put together a "deluxe" edition.
