During the summer of 2006, thousands of cluster munitions were dropped on civilian areas in Lebanon. Thirty years earlier, untold numbers of ordnance were dropped on civilian areas in Cambodia, then a neutral country. In this film, you are witness to what civilians in all war-torn areas face for generations after war has ended.
Bombhunters profiles rural villagers who search for and dismantle bombs - sometimes cutting them open with hacksaws - in order to sell the scrap metal for profit. Through the use of lipstick cameras and extensive fieldwork, Bombhunters profiles the experiences of rural scrapmetal seekers as they risk their lives to clear UXO (unexploded ordnance) from their land in order to protect their families from harm and to make enough money to survive.
The film also draws connections to other post-conflict nations around the world as their citizens continue to grapple with residual, persistent effects of war, and the complex realities of achieving “peace” after armed conflict has ended.
