Synopsis

Obara and the Merchants tells the story of a powerful hunter named Obara who lives in a town experiencing a famine. When he is finally able to eat, a group of hungry merchants appears! Will Obara share, or keep his food to himself? What decision would you make?
This DVD is an adaptation of the picture book written by Michelle Bodden and represents the first collaboration with Water Daughter Publishing. Based on a traditional religious story from the Yoruba people of Nigeria, it is one of a set of stories told to help people develop their iwa, or character, and to give guidance in times of uncertainty. Obara and the Merchants serves both purposes wonderfully, giving today’s generation a reminder from yesterday of the enduring qualities that matter.
Obara and the Merchants has been featured in the 2007 Festival de Cannes Short Film Corner and has garnered six official film festival selections and counting. The rich baritone voice of actor/comedian Alonzo Bodden narrates the story, and adds a whole new dimension to Obara the hunter and all of the merchants he meets. Director: Manauvaskar Kublall | bio
Manauvaskar Kublall is a multi media artist born of Indo-Caribbean heritage.
He credits his immigrant experience, and the search for his cultural roots that fostered his artistic voice. Filmmaking enables him to explore and reveal truth simultaneously incorporating his unique dialect of visual imagery. His films as well as his photography are a journey through the imagination whether with archival or abstract images. His methodology is a surreal visual story telling with a foundation that is based on real life events. His experience has brought him an extensive knowledge of film and video, from pre-production to post production.

He is the director for Media Sutra, a media services company in the field of photography, graphic design, film and video. Manauvaskar continues his journey as an artist using his company to build and explore the depths of his creativity and art.

Richard McKeown a father of two sons, is passionate about presenting positive and realistic images of Black males in ways that boys will enjoy. He believes these images are essential to help boys develop strong character and become exciting men. Richard uses his creativity to produce engaging stories. Richard is also the president of his own company, KoolKidz Television & Publishing LLC. Other DVD short programs are currently in the making.

As if being a teacher, a United Federation of Teachers officer and an AFT vice president weren't enough, Michelle Bodden also is the author of two children's books--and plans to start on a third this summer. Her most recent book, Obara the Gatekeeper, was published at the end of last year. Like her 2004 debut, Obara and the Merchants, the second work is based on Yoruban stories from Nigeria that Bodden has told to her own children. Her books clearly are a labor of love, but Bodden also sees a connection to her duties as the UFT's elementary school vice president. "My work at UFT is very focused on creating better school environments and working conditions for educators," she says. "Writing is a great way for me to stay connected with children, so I think my two passions complement each other." Bodden published the books through her own company, Water Daughter Publishing. Obara and the Merchants won honorable mention at the 13th Annual Writer's Digest Self-Published Book Awards.
