“GOD CAN MAKE A WAY”
This song was truly a gift from God into my life. I was at a point where I seemed to have run dry and could not find the inspiration to write any more songs. I tried over and over in my own strength to write the lyrics for this song. I already had the music, but I just couldn’t seem to get a sense of what the song should be about. My wife, Ginger, and I had planned a vacation to Hawaii to celebrate our first year wedding anniversary. Actually, this trip was a combined honeymoon and anniversary since we had been unable to take a real honeymoon the previous year. This was our first trip ever to Hawaii. We both had dreamed of visiting there ever since we were children but neither one of us had ever made that dream come true. We chose the island of Maui based on recommendations from many of our friends. I felt compelled to bring my portable CD player and my laptop computer on the trip for I was sure that this island paradise might inspire me to write this new song and, as usual, God did not let me down.
One morning, a few days after we had arrived, I sat on the balcony of our hotel room looking out over the ocean. I prayed for God to show me what He would have me write. It seemed like only a few minutes before my fingers just started typing away as if they belonged to someone else’s hands. This is how God has written most of His songs through me using His heart and my fingers. Whenever I finish writing a song, I am always surprised when I read the lyrics and see just what God actually wrote. This song was certainly not a disappointment and was truly more than I could have ever hoped for.
After I had finished writing the song and had practiced singing it a few times, I began praying to God to thank him for His gift of this song. I asked Him why I couldn’t write the song prior to coming to Maui. I believe that He then reminded me that all the islands of Hawaii were originally volcanic mountains under the water. Normally we would consider volcanoes to be bad things that should be avoided at all costs. God however, in His infinite wisdom, allowed these volcanoes to erupt, emitting the lava, dust and smoke which would normally be devastating to everything within many miles but He used them to produce what most people would agree to be one of the most beautiful places on earth. I still wasn’t sure just what this meant to me personally or to this song so I asked God to show me why He used me and why Maui. I believe that God then spoke these words to me: “Just as I could make a paradise out of nothing by adding fire, dust and ash, so can I rebuild the lives of my children who will surrender all the smoldering embers, dust and ashes that they have made of your own lives to me so I can heal them.” God wants to bring us back to the place where we can again become that perfect child in his sight that He created us to be.
I then knew right away why it had to be me who wrote this song for God. My life had been a twisted mess of failures and heartaches before I finally allowed God into take control of it. I am living proof of what the power of God can do in a person’s life if you are just willing to do two very important things. First you have to give God the permission to be an active part of your life by asking His forgiveness for your sins and accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. That seems hard for some people to do, but it is not nearly as hard as the next thing He asks of us, which is to be obedient to what God tells you to do. He needs your cooperation or He won’t be able to help you and strengthen you. He will stretch you beyond where you think you can go, but He will always be with you to make sure that you arrive there safely. He has always been there for me and has never let me down, and I know in my heart that He will do the same for you because He has given His word on it. The Bible tells us that it was God’s spoken word that created all of heaven and earth along with every living thing. You can therefore truly believe that God’s word is the most powerful force in the universe. The Bible also tells that us God is the same yesterday, today and forever, so you must also believe that when God gives His word about something He will also honor it. God has promised that He will never leave you or forsake you. That’s a pretty good word to choose to have on your side, working for your benefit. My prayer is that everyone will make the same choice that I have and agree that “God Can Make a Way” in their lives.
