"Madams of the Barbary Coast" is a documentary film that tells the scandalous and fascinating stories of the Madams, prostitutes and other "women of questionable virtue" who helped bring culture, beauty, and compassion to the gold rush era of San Francisco. Neglected by history, these pioneer women played a pivotal role in civilizing one of the most dangerous places in the world - San Francisco's Barbary Coast.
"Madams of the Barbary Coast" features interviews with some of the leading San Francisco and Gold Rush historians, reinactments, photographs from gold rush archives, drawings, maps, and other unearthed historical discoveries and rare footage. The documentary brings alive a time when madams, prostitutes, and other courageous pioneering women lived and worked in the world's most dangerous and sinful city - Sodom and Gomorrah of the frontier West.
Recently broadcast on PBS as part of Womens History Month, "Madams of the Barbary Coast" was awarded Best Historical Documentary by the 2005 New York International Independent Film and Video Festival as well as for Best Art Direction by the 2005 Golden Gate Fiction and Documentary Film Festival.
