Synopsis

This show lets the artists speak for themselves as we get tantalizing glimpses of their art forms. The companion piece on the DVD, "The Arts on Their Own," provides full performances and more of the interview of the cartoneria (paper mache) artist.

A world famous performer, choreographer, percussionist and expert on his heritage, Afro-Peruvian music and dance, Lalo Izquierdo is one of the luminaries of this show both for his performance and for his fascinating explanations of this tradition.
cartoneria (paper mache) artist: Ruben Guzman | bio
Ruben Guzman has exhibited widely in California as well as in his native Mexico. An artist trained by the famous Linares family, his creations reflect his hertige--myths, legends and dreams. The colors are vibrant, the forms highly imaginative, and his pieces range in size from a few inches to 12 feet tall.
singer and basist (bajo sexto), Conjunto Romero: Lauro Gallardo | bio
With stories of growing up picking cotton in Texas, Lauro Gallardo tells of getting his first accordion and learning Mexican norteño music as a child. A musician all his life (he gave up the accordion in favor of the bajo sexto a few years ago), his stories bring his art to life.
artistic director & lead dancer, Grupo Folklorico Talpalli: Jose Samoza | bio
A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, Jose Samoza is preserving his Mexican heritage and encouraging youth to do so as well as he performs and teaches his knowledge and love of Mexican folk dance. Son of a professional dancer from Mexico, he is as knowledgeable about the dances as he is skillful as a performer.
dancer and co-artistic director, Ecuadorian Folklore Ballet: Grizelle Puente | bio
A native of Ecuador, Grizelle Puente has been performing folkloric dances from the mountain regions and indigenous communities all her life. Her knowledge of the costumes and the regions they come from are outstanding.

Director: Eve A. Ma | bio
Producer-director of this show, Eve A. Ma turned to video & film in 2002 after several earlier successful careers. In 2004 she founded her own production company, Palomino Productions.

Since that time, she has produced 19 DVDs and has some 30-odd shows available for television broadcast. Ethnic and cultural diversity, and the arts, are her special focus. (She, herself, dances flamenco.)

Her shows have been screened as far away as Athens, Greece; aired over PBS stations in the U.S., and won regional awards. She is also listed in Who's Who in the World.
