Synopsis

A collection of visionary short films by the acclaimed experimental filmmaker. DVD includes 7 films.

"Li: The Patterns of Nature" -employs time-lapse, microscopy, animation and cymatic imagery to explore the Chinese concept of "Li"- organic patterning, and the underlying inherent order of the physical world as revealed in its natural patterns and rhythms.

"Form and Void" -an abstract experimental animation composed of thousands of rapidly strobing inkblot patterns- a trance film.

"Rites of Passage" -a poetic examination of spiritual dead and rebirth.

"Kirlian Experiment No. 3"- employs Kirlian or electromagnetic discharge photography, named for the Russian Parapsychology researchers who popularized its use.

"Hidden World" -explores the macro and microscopic life in and around a pond.

"Dance of the Phosphenes"- inspired by the neuro-optical phenomenon known as phosphenes- those luminous patterns that we see when our eyes are closed- this silent animated film journeys through universes large and small in just 90 seconds.

Special Feature: The Making of "Li" with director's commentary. The unusual cinematic techniques that were used in "Li: The Patterns of Nature" are explained by the director who won the Best Cinematography Award at the 46th Ann Arbor Film Festival.

Director: John N. Campbell | bio
John N. Campbell is an experimental filmmaker who graduated from the Experimental Animation program at California Institute of the Arts in 1993. He has produced dozens of films and videos which have won awards at major film festivals and been screened internationally at film festivals, on the internet, German TV, PBS and Independent TV stations.
Sound Design: John C. Graves | bio
John's C. Graves' music is currently featured in the Spider Cues and Pump Audio production music libraries, and in addition to his feature scores, his cues have been used in trailers for Inside Man, Chronicles of Riddick, and Bourne Supremacy. His musical studies began on a Steinway Grand at age 3.

John studied on the Moog 35 in 1976 under Dan Wyman, and began taking music clients in his own studio in 1980. He studied Fairlight with Beverly Grigsby at CSUN and Film Scoring with Don Brandon Ray at UCLA. John has achieved a rich, authentic, orchestrated sound in his compositional work since 1984.

Tom Cason is an accomplished electronic musician who is a founding member of the ensemble, The Lillies.
