Follow black Labs Midnight, Blue, and Moonshine as they spend their days roaming in the forest, wading in the river, and playing in the surf. The three dogs find their own way through nine different adventures, only occasionally encountering humans. The dogs’ master introduces them, sends them out to play, and feeds them when they return home. Later, a streamside banjo player calls them ashore with his music. Throughout the movie, original and traditional bluegrass instrumentals seem to spark the dogs’ movements, as strings might inspire the actions of puppets. To fill out the dogs’ story, a narrative audio track follows questions posed by two young children, who are in turn guided by the commentary of an experienced woodsman.
