Synopsis

Forensic entomology is becoming recognized as a valuable tool during criminal investigations, particularly when time of death is uncertain. With the development of this tool, and increased use of insect evidence in court, comes the need for established standard practices and procedures for collecting and handling entomological evidence. The purpose of this training video is to provide the basic, yet necessary, instruction needed to properly collect entomological evidence so that this tool can be fully utilized during criminal investigations.

This video was produced by board certified Forensic Entomologists to promote standard practices when collecting and handling insect evidence and to ensure appropriate information and evidence is collected during death investigations. This video describes common insects encountered during death investigations, and where to look for them during various stages of their development and human decomposition. Standard practices for how to collect adult and immature insects from human remains are demonstrated, and proper techniques for preserving this evidence is provided. Additional instruction includes: temperature collection, appropriate field documentation, rearing techniques, and shipping protocols. The validity and usefulness of entomological evidence is greatly dependent on proper standards and practices, which begin at the time of collection.

Script Supervisor: Ryan K. Kimbirauskas | bio
Ryan Kimbirauskas is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in medical entomology, with a specialization in forensic science, from Michigan State University. He has been active in the field of forensic entomology since 1999, and in 2005 became board certified through the American Board of Forensic Entomology. Ryan is qualified as an expert witness in forensic entomology, and routinely provides training to local, state and federal agencies on proper collection techniques of entomological evidence.
Script Supervisor: Dr. Richard W. Merritt | bio
Dr. Richard W. Merritt, Ph.D. is Professor and previous Chair of the Department of Entomology at Michigan State University. He is an aquatic entomologist and ecologist specializing in the feeding ecology and biology of aquatic insects. He also is a forensic entomologist and has served as Chair of the American Board of Forensic Entomology and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences.
Script Supervisor: Dr. Jeffery K. Tomberlin | bio
Dr. Tomberlin received his Ph.D. in 2001 from the Department of Entomology at
the University of Georgia. He has been active in forensic entomology since
1994, and he is a Diplomate with the American Board of Forensic Entomology.
Currently, Dr. Tomberlin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of
Entomology at Texas A&M University.

Dr. Benbow is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Dayton, working on disease ecology and medical entomology in West Africa. In 2005, he was elected to the inaugural Executive Committee of North American Forensic Entomology Association (NAFEA) where he continues to serve as the Newsletter Chief Editor and Webmaster of the official NAFEA website (www.nafea.net). Most recently, Dr. Benbow serves as the Subject Editor for the Forensics and Medical and Veterinary Entomology area of the Entomology Digital Library of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the journal Pan-Pacific Entomologist.

Dr. John R. Wallace is a Professor in the Department of Biology at Millersville University in Millersville, PA. His research interests cover topics such as mosquito ecology, insect/disease interactions and the role of aquatic organisms such as insects, algae and crayfish in forensic science. Dr. Wallace and Dr. Tomberlin co-founded the North American Forensic Entomology Association (NAFEA) in 2005 of which he served as President in 2006. He is a certified forensic entomologist and a Diplomate with the American Board of Forensic Entomology.
