  "Trying to sum up Lou Castel's filmography may not be a reasonable, or even possible, endeavor since, over thirty-seven years and more than eighty films so far, he has traced a line passing through a diversity of styles, film genres, budgets and lengths. This path has lead him to work with such actors as Bibi Andersson, Gian Maria Volonté, Delphine Seyrig, Alberto Sordi, Pierre Clémenti, Hanna Schygulla, Klaus Kinski, Nathalie Richard, Jean-Pierre Léaud and Victoria Abril; and major directors including Marco Bellocchio, Wim Wenders, Raul Ruiz, Benoît Jacquot, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Claude Chabrol, Daniel Schmid, Gérard Courant, Helke Sander, Olivier Assayas and Philippe Garrel.
  Using a word like 'career' to describe his work, although justified, is almost nonsensical: his choices are too rigorous, his ceaseless, personal reflection on acting and its practise far too original for such a conventional term. He rejected money and fame, and for a long time was hardly able to distinguish fiction from reality, or his professional life from his private one, both being intertwined materially and psychologically from the start.
  On the other hand, there is a word that incessantly comes back as he speaks, bringing to light the subterranean, seminal logic that has guided him all along: militancy. If Castel's political commitments had cataclysmic results — such as a split with cinema for two years, as well as a salutary, 'unconsciously provoked' expulsion from Italy in 1972 — this line of conduct also runs throughout his films. It has determined his choice in roles and directors, as well as his acting inventiveness — for instance, in the manner in which he calls up motivations from political contexts beyond the parts he plays."

  JAMES JUNE SCHNEIDER aka MATTERLINK is a filmmaker, video performer, writer, and curator/programmer. He wrote and directed THE STATICOSE CHAMBER, BLUE IS BEAUTIFUL (with DC's punk-gospel group The MAKE-UP) and the sci-fi tone poem feature 1,2,3, WHITEOUT as well as others. He is an advocate of video/audio-sampling, a form of live cinema which he performs as MATTERLINK. SCHNEIDER has collaborated with musicians, activists, and Trade Unions as a filmmaker and via live projections, music videos, and sensory audio-visual experiments.
