Synopsis

What is the relationship between art and nature? In Gretchen Hogue’s short film ‘Water Paper Time’ the gradual and oftentimes imperceptible processes of natural change are given artistic form through a sensitive portrayal of the work of paper artist Helen Hiebert. Using time-lapse photography the film explores how external forces such as time, gravity and molecular structure bend, tear and wrinkle Hiebert’s handmade paper, producing startlingly allusive and organic forms which recall the fibers and plants that the artist used in the paper-making process. A meditation upon the cyclical relationship between human and nature, ‘Water Paper Time’ reveals the fascinating ways in which nature and art go on changing even (and perhaps especially) when we are not looking.

Featured Artist: Helen Hiebert | bio
Helen Hiebert is a Portland, Oregon paper artist who exhibits her experimental work with handmade paper and teaches and lectures about papermaking and lamp making internationally. She is author of "Papermaking with Plants", "The Papermaker's Companion", and "Paper Illuminated". In 2008, Hiebert received a 2008 Regional Arts & Culture Council Project Grant and an Oregon Art Commission Career Development Grant to assist with the production and marketing of this film. Composer/Musician: Kell Black | bio
Kell Black is a professor at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee. He earned his BA in music and German from the State University of New York, College at Fredonia, studied harpsichord and Baroque performance practice at the Wiener Hochschule für Musik in Vienna, Austria and received an MFA in drawing and sculpture at the University of Connecticut, Storrs. As a visual artist he has exhibited widely across the US and Switzerland, and as a musician he is active both as a composer and performer, writing scores for video and dance as well as works for solo piano. He was a founding member of the post-punk band, "Sluggo" and he is currently a member of "Black and Jones" a sound art/video collaborative with Barry Jones. www.blackandjones.net.

Gretchen Hogue is a film and video maker living in Portland, Oregon. Her work has screened internationally at film festivals, microcinemas, and galleries including Views from the Avant Garde, Chicago Underground Fim Festival, Mad Cat Film Festival, TBA Fest, and Anti Matter. She is a frequent curator as well, programming screenings of experimental films and videos for venues across the country. She is also the director of the Portland Documentary and eXperimental Film Festival (PDX Fest).
