Based on historical events and real people, Final Gifts enlarges our understanding of the Warsaw Ghetto resistance and of the Salvadoran Civil War. The film celebrates the love,
the courage, the tenderness and compassion of two heroic women who fought against tyranny, a peasant guerrilla leader in the Salvadoran civil war against a United States-funded fascist army, and a Jewish doctor who served in the World War II Warsaw Uprising against the Nazis.
When the two women encounter each other after death, they are able in their communion with one another to speak of the unspeakable for the first time and to share loving memories of husbands and children they were unable to save. Two women, peeling off the layers of their past suffering and joy rediscover themselves and each other and begin their healing.
The Salvadoran peasant became a guerrilla leader after her village was massacred by the Reagan-funded fascist army. Her daughter and her husband fought alongside her with the guerrillas and lost their lives in battle. The Jewish pediatrician worked with sick and starving children in the Warsaw Ghetto hospital and smuggled weapons for the eventual Jewish uprising against the Nazis in World War II.
As the characters wrestle with their concepts of themselves, each other, and God, they regain the lost ground they surrendered in life and discover the wholeness of their souls.
