"Going beyond typical documentary methods of re-enactment, filmmaker Richard Lanni brings to life American involvement in WW11's D-Day, with battlefield historian Ellwood von Seibold guiding viewers on a chronologically accurate review of that "DAY OF DAYS" on the beaches of Normandy. Driving a 43 Dodge command car and wearing period-correct GI-issue gear, von Seibold's passion for military history shines through. Veterans of the battle (both American and German) recount details of the brutal and pivotal incidents that were at the centre of this historic confrontation. The tragedy of faulty intelligence , the success of superior strategy, and good luck are explored here with stunning visuals, compelling interviews and clear graphics and maps. In one scene, von Seibold dons the garb of a WW11 para-trooper complete with chutes and weaponry weighing 150 pounds -to illustrate how some of the jumpers were easy targets , giving up their lives before ever touching the ground. Techniques like this , combined with intriguing coverage of well known battles, make this a powerful program . Highly recommended".

Rather than simply telling viewers, "This unit was sent to capture this objective," the production uses maps and narration to explain the importance of each objective in relation to overall success. A unit patch laid over the map identifies the unit being discussed as the 101st Airborne, 82nd Airborne, etc.

The overall feel of The Americans on D-Day is that of watching a BBC program on the telly about the Yanks in the Normandy Invasion, although the BBC had no involvement in the project. The sound of a British voice narrating a film about U.S. combat troops may surprise American viewers at first, but von Seibold’s enthusiasm for his subject will quickly overcome that reaction.

It is an entertaining and informative production that appears to have been a labor of love. And this reviewer has to admit, after watching it, he’d like to take one of von Seibold’s tours to see if the tour guide is always this animated.
