In 1861, one boy’s quest to become part of a war that was tearing
the country apart would lead him into an adventure like no other he had
ever experienced. Running away from his home in Newark, Ohio, he left to
join with the 22nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry and, despite opposition
from the officers, he struggled to be accepted by the men of the regiment.
His adventures would lead him into battle, fighting against the Confederate
forces at Chickamauga, and beyond.
The story of Johnny Joseph “Lincoln” Clem would be passed down from
generation to generation, in story and song, becoming a national hero and
a legend in his own lifetime. But his true story would be hidden in myth
and fable, embellished by the media and enhanced by word of mouth.
Now, Johnny’s true story comes to life on the big screen in an all-new
documentary, a film two years in the making. Director R. David Burns and
Executive Producer Wayne W. Whited have sorted through the legend to
find the true facts about the boy’s adventures to tell the heroic tale of a
young boy’s determination and struggle with war, disease, death and
destruction that was the American Civil War.
