Bishop Mary Lena Lewis Tate (1871-1930) is the Founder and First Chief Overseer of the organization known as the Church of the Living God, and is recognized as the first African American and perhaps the second female to head such an organization in the United States. Shortly after her death in 1930 the church organization split into three seperate entities known today as, the Lewis Dominion, the Keith Dominion, and the Jewell Dominion churches of the Living God.
The churches first general assembly took place in Greenville, Alabama in 1908.To celebrate that 100 year milestone, Bishop Meharry H. Lewis (Lewis Dominion) and Mary Lena Tates grandson, teamed up with Bishop Faye Moore (Jewell Dominion) in an attempt to restore fellowship and reconciliation among the churches and former members of the embattled organization. This great reunion took place November 26-29, 2008 and what a great time it was. The Amazing Grace "Sacred Strings" Praise Band was also invited to represent the seventy plus year steel guitar tradition that began with Willie Eason in the 1930's.For more information about the Sacred Steel Legacy see www.sacredstrings.com
