Synopsis

English colonists settled in Bare Cove as early as 1632, but over the next few years, over 40 Puritan families arrived from Hingham, England, and re-named the community Hingham, which then became part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

In 1681, the sons and grandsons of the original settlers built the meetinghouse that still stands today, which is the only remaining meetinghouse of its kind, as well as the oldest church in America to have been in continuous use. It is now a Registered National Historic Landmark.

This film is the story of the evolution of both the building and the community of Hingham, as the town and the Old Ship Meetinghouse are now well into their fourth century.

The original video tape of The Old Ship Meetinghouse was produced in 1996, and was shown on The History Channel in 1998.

Jeff Spencer was born on January 25, 1946 in Hingham, MA. A graduate of Dartmouth College, he spent many years coordinating community-based programming for Continental Cablevision. Included in his work over the years were historical documentaries, “The Old Ship Meetinghouse” and “Worlds End: A History of Gentle Stewardship”. A gifted player and composer, he co-founded the Memphis Rockabilly Band, an acclaimed rockabilly act which toured nationally and in Europe. Over the years the band has played with Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, and Roy Orbison, among others. Jeff was working on the DVD release of this documentary at the time of his untimely death in February of 2009. He is very much missed by family and friends and fans everywhere.
