Synopsis

The Everyday is a profile of the monks living at Mount Saviour Monastery in Pine City, New York. The program, shot over the course of five years, is an invitation into the private and holy lives of monks.
The Everyday includes candid interviews with the brothers on some of the key elements of Benedictine spirituality including hospitality, work, prayer and love. The monks offer insights to the joys and the disappointments of monastic life and in the process, lay down the groundwork for a new way of thinking about our own

Executive Producer: Matthew Kells | bio
Matthew is the owner and self-proclaimed ‘caretaker’ of Spooky Truth Productions; a television production company based in Brooklyn, NY. His twelve years of directing documentary/non-fiction programming have earned him six New York Emmy awards, three New York Festivals awards, two Cine Golden Eagle Awards and countless migraine headaches. His most recent PBS Hour Big Town Groove was nominated for a total of 5 New York Emmys and won two (Outstanding Writing and Research).

Since forming Spooky Truth Productions in 1999, Matthew has directed/produced hundreds of hours of non-fiction programming for several clients including: Food Network, Discovery Channel, Court TV, YES Network, WE (Women's Entertainment) and PBS. The subjects of Matthew’s films range both in subject and style and include profiles of bike messengers, garbage men, comic book artists, movie stars, paparazzi and Matthew’s favorite topic, New York City.

"The Everyday", a film about monastic life, is his first independent documentary.

Matthew lives with his wife Catherine on a dead-end street in Brooklyn; they have a bouncing baby girl and own a depressed dog named ‘Stetson T’.
Producer: Sean McGinn | bio
Sean began his professional career as a news videographer, shooting in Bronx and Louisiana. McGinn wisely moved on to Metro TV in New York where he meet co-worker Matthew Kells who was impressed with his guerilla filmmaking style of shooting and his knowledge of 80's rap lyrics. Sean McGinn is credited with first catching 'Spooky Guy' on camera and wrongly encouraging Kells to persue it as his life's work.

Sean, much like the other Spooky truth members has vast experience in documentaries, celebrity profiles, live music and short films.

The 'Spooky' part is easy. Spooky is the feeling I get when I walk into a run-down haunted house in the middle of Coney Island. It's not gory or terrifying, it's silly and playful and a little nostalgic. It's a point of view that allows me to laugh at the good things and not take the bad things too seriously? 'The Truth', of course, is always infinitely more difficult, but when applied to television production, I think it comes down to this:

Spooky Truth Productions makes all kinds of television, but everything we do has one thing in common: our dedication to the art of storytelling. Telling great stories on television or in front of a campfire is really a measure of how skillfully one can bend the truth. We bend it in a way that seeks out the essence of a person or place and brings it to life.

Both news and 'Reality TV' continue to accentuate the worst in people and situations. Instead of telling the whole truth, they tell the worst truth the bad news. More often than not, the first rule of the media is to aim low. Most media organizations are not telling the human stories; instead they embarrass and exploit whoever is willing to go along for the ride in the name of American entertainment.

As a result, in the past year alone, desperate single women have been shipped to Alaska in search of a date, B-list celebrities have eaten worms, and another group of beautiful people were stranded on an island where cheating, plotting and wearing a cute swimsuit could win them a million dollars. All of this has made me wonder what the resale value of my TV is; but instead I formed this company and decided to follow a core set of beliefs:

* TV should never be hurtful and is always better when it helps.
* We are committed to telling great stories by accentuating the truth (Huck Finn style), not by amplifying the lowest common denominator.
* We believe, firmly, that good stories are all around us, waiting patiently for their tellers.

For me, “The Everyday” is one more entry in the mystery of God’s providence. It’s the exclamation point on time-tested maxims like: “Bidden or unbidden, God is present” and “Life is what happens when you’re planning something else.”
