Program Notes
Musique Concrete is a form of electroacoustic music in which a composer makes recordings of source sounds and creates musical structures by transforming them. In the 1990s I became interested in expanding this concept to
multimedia composition: videos were transformed using digital processing and these transformations were combined with the audio. The term Visual Music was first used in reference to the works of Kandinsky: over the years it has been applied to various optical processes of turning sound into light and light into sound. I define visual music as music that has an integral light element: in my case, a highly synchronized light show that works in harmony with the audio.

Technical Specifications
The performance disc for requiem pour la mort de la passion is supplied on a video DVD. It requires a DVD player [or amplifier] capable of decoding a 5.1 AC3 audio stream and supplying the channels to separate outputs. The Left-front [Lf] and Right-front [Rf] channels from the DVD are sent to the playback speakers situated on the stage; these speakers must be full frequency and able to reproduce bass down to approximately 50hz without distortion. The Left-surround [Ls] and Right-surround [Rs] channels from the DVD are sent to the playback speakers situated in the back of the hall [If surround sound is not available, these channels must be added to the output going to the main speakers.] The center channel is a monaural click/count track that is sent only to an in-ear monitor for the performer. This track must not be heard in either the front or back speakers. Theoretically, with sufficient rehearsal with the accompaniment, requiem pour la mort de la passion could be performed without use of the click track, but experience has shown this to be difficult.
