While watching Chicago improv comedy, and seeing these quick-witted golden
moments evaporate to a tiny audience of only of 45 people - "We gotta get these
guys on tape" became a mantra of Carla Cross, the writer, producer and director of
"Best of Chicago Improv " Someone needed to get these actors and sketches on tape
and showcase what the Midwest had to offer.
The series of sketches, entitled PUBLIC ACCESS, revolves around a small public
access television station in Busterville, WI, its station manager, Mr. Blessinger, and
all the quirky shows that appear on the station. The station manager is an easy-going
Everyman, the only sane person in a town of loonies. His wife, ChaCha, doesnt speak
English, and leaves him for a circus clown. Blessinger finds this out while interviewing a
blind guy for the position of cameraman. Between scenes revolving around Blessinger
and his love life, we see the various Public Access shows.
BLONDES FORUM a talk show dedicated to the unique problems and concerns of
blondes, hosted by Elka Shaysta, the quintessential blonde.
PHOTO GUY One of the locals takes us on a guided tour of his photo album.
CRAFT LADIES - Patsy and Peggy get together with a couple of hot glue guns and
some economy alcohol and become increasingly inebriated as the show goes on, making
crafts that only look good after 75 beers.
The auditions for this group were something to see. Improv actors from Second
City, Improv Olympics, Mission Improvable and Sweet lips have proven to be a cache of
raw comedic talent that seem to explode when put together and given the right
scripts.
